“I can highly recommend the Data Domain Restorer. Our exchange admin loves not having to call back tapes for restores.” |
MEDIA ALERTData Domain Customers to Present at VMworld Las Vegas 2008Sessions Highlight Best Practices for Enhancing Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Using Data Deduplication and Virtualization Technologieswww.datadomain.com SANTA CLARA, Calif. — September 12, 2008 —Data Domain (NASDAQ: DDUP), the leading provider of deduplication storage systems, announced that Data Domain customers will be presenting in three sessions at the upcoming VMworld Las Vegas 2008. Each session highlights the benefits of combining data deduplication and virtualization to advance disaster recovery and business continuity capabilities. A special customer-focused panel will be moderated by Ron Ogelsby, service director for virtualization at GlassHouse Technologies, Inc. Mr. Ogelsby will guide a discussion with VMware/Data Domain customers which will include participation from subject matter experts from Data Domain. The second session features Dan Lewis, manager of network services at The USC Marshall School of Business. Lewis will discuss his experiences implementing both Data Domain deduplication storage systems and VMware virtualization technologies in a case study-style format. The third session is centered on the U.S. Air Force’s “Project Bonfire” infrastructure redesign for the Hill Air Force Base. Doug Babb, Chief IT Architect of Hill Air Force Base for Systems Implementers will present with additional project leaders and discuss the role of data deduplication as one of the technologies used in the project. Speaker: Dan Lewis, Manager of Network Services, USC Marshall School of Business Date/Time/Location: Wednesday, September 17 at 11:30-12:00 pm PT, Solutions Exchange Theater Session Description: Exponential data growth and increasing compliance requirements are forcing users everywhere to re-evaluate their approach to Disaster Recovery. Many users have turned to either data deduplication technology or server virtualization individually to help address the challenges. But it’s becoming increasing clear that, where users virtualize, they should also “dedupe” to enhance their disaster recovery capabilities. This case study-style session features a user who has deployed both VMware and Data Domain technologies and will discuss the synergies between the two technologies as related to DR.
Speaker: Doug Babb, Chief IT Architect of Hill Air Force Base for Systems Implementers Date/Time: Thursday, September 18 at 10:30-11:30am PT Session Description: This session reviews the methodology at the foundation of Project Bonfire's success, along with new methods and procedures around security and performance that have been forged. Also discussed are the pitfalls and lessons learned in migrating to low cost, open, virtualized, highly available grid computing. Project Bonfire started as a quick "scorched earth" Oracle database and Web infrastructure re-design and deployment while performing a storage area network refresh and server consolidation effort at Hill Air Force Base in Utah. Phase-1 of Project Bonfire was less than 2% of the cost of the large UNIX environment it replaced and is achieving better performance and higher availability levels. Phase-1 established the foundation for Phase-2 of migrating the Datacenter to VMware.
